HostEngine Host Computers For GPU-Xpander Rackmount Products

HostEngines are rackmount computers that connect to GPU-Xpander products for hosting eight or more double-wide or sixteen single-wide GPUs as well as other PCI Express (PCIe) adapters or controllers. Connect eight NVIDIA® Tesla® C2050 / C2070 or Quadro® 5000 / 6000 GPUs in GPU-Xpander Rackmount 8 to a single HostEngine computer for rendering, for color grading or for high-performance compute (HPC) cluster operations.

By connecting the HostEngine rackmount computer to GPU-Xpander Rackmount 8, you can add eight double-wide GPUs such as NVIDIA Tesla C2070 or Quadro® 6000 for running Autodesk® 3ds Max or Bunkspeed® Shot with Mental Images® iray on Microsoft® Windows® 7, or BlackMagic Design® DaVinci Resolve® 9.0 for Linux.

BlackMagic Design has certified DaVinci Resolve® 9.0 for Linux to run on GPU-Xpander Rackmount 8 using eight GPUs such as NVIDIA Quadro 5000 or NVIDIA GeForce® GTX 580. When you order Rackmount 8 with HostEngine, Cubix can install the Host Interface Controllers (HICs), the operating system, the drivers and the application.

Features And Benefits

HostEngine computers feature single or dual Intel® Xeon® 64-bit, 3.2GHz or lower-speed processor(s) with the Intel 5520 chipset. HostEngine provides PCIe Gen 2.0 x16 expansion slots as follows:

  • Four PCIe Gen 2.0 x16 (x16 electrical) expansion slots are in HostEngine-X1.
  • Seven PCIe Gen 2.0 x16 (x8 electrical) expansion slots are in HostEngine-X2.

Each slot accommodates a half-height controller such as the Cubix HIC that connects to GPU-Xpander. Each HIC connects to a Main Interface Board (MIB) with multiple slots within a GPU-Xpander Rackmount 8 or other GPU-Xpander product. Connect each of two HICs in one HostEngine to a GPU-Xpander Rackmount 8 or one HIC in each of two HostEngines to a GPU-Xpander Rackmount 8.

2U Or 4U Configuration

HostEngine is a 2U computer that mounts horizontally within a rack mount cabinet and accommodates the Cubix HIC that connects to GPU-Xpander products. Optionally, HostEngine is available as a 4U computer that accommodates full-height, full-length PCIe x16 GPUs or other cards as follows:

  • Four PCIe x16 HICs fit and function for connection to GPU-Xpander Rackmount 8 in 2U HostEngine-X1.
  • Four double-wide, full-length, full-height GPUs fit and function in 4U HostEngine-X1.
  • Four PCIe x16 HICs fit and function for connection to GPU-Xpander Rackmount 8 in 2U HostEngine-X2.
  • Seven single-wide or three double-wide, full-length, full-height GPUs fit and function in 4U HostEngine-X2.

Ease Of Installation And Service

When you order HostEngine with an operating system like Microsoft Windows 7 64-bit, GPU-Xpander Rackmount 8 and GPUs such as Tesla C2070 or Quadro 6000, Manufacturing installs the drivers and updates as well as the applications and updates for you. With pre-configured HostEngines from Cubix, you mount the units within your rack mount cabinets, and then connect and configure them within your network. You'll start much more quickly with pre-configured HostEngines from Cubix than if you install everything from scratch yourself.

Service individual hosts as needed to increase uptime by up to 75 percent. You can quickly and easily add or remove HostEngine to / from your rackmount cabinet without affecting other HostEngine computers. You can also quickly and easily add or remove hard disk drives to / from HostEngine without affecting other HostEngine computers.

Connections

HostEngine provides PS/2 ports for keyboard and mouse, integrated VGA local port video, USB 2.0 ports, two Gbps Ethernet ports, a COM port and audio ports are on the rear panel. The AC power receptacle is also on the rear panel.

HostEngine also provides access for Cubix PCIe x16 HICs that connect to GPU-Xpander Rackmount 8 or other GPU-Xpander enclosures using external PCIe x16 cables. With these connections, you can mount HostEngine immediately above or below GPU-Xpander Rackmount 8.

XpanderBlades

  • HostEngine-X1 provides four PCIe x16 slots (x16 electrical)
  • HostEngine-X2 provides seven PCIe x16 slots (x8 electrical)
